Case Study - Isles FM

In March 2009 the Live Hebrides team approached Isles FM with the idea of the radio station streaming online, across their broadband internet connection; in essence becoming an “internet radio” station. The idea was met with much enthusiasm from the manager and team at the station and within a matter of weeks the community radio station was broadcasting their music and shows to a global audience. It’s early days, but already the station has significantly increased their listener numbers and have podcasted some shows which are being listened to as far away as New Zealand and Canada. Alasdair Ferguson, the station manager is keen to further develop the good work already carried out and has re-vamped the Isles FM website as well as putting plans in place to introduce new programmes, such as an ex-pat show.

Alasdair says “the high speed broadband internet connection makes webcasting technically feasible. It has provided a relatively cheap alternative to the high costs of conventional broadcasting and allows us to reach a global audience.”
